"Whoever is born here, is doomed to stay 'til death. Whoever settles, never leaves.
Welcome to Black Spring, the seemingly picturesque Hudson Valley town haunted by the Black Rock Witch, a 17th century woman whose eyes and mouth are sewn shut. Muzzled, she walks the streets and enters your homes at will. She stands next to your bed for nights on end. Everybody knows that her eyes may never be opened.
The elders of Black Spring have virtually quarantined the town by using high-tech surveillance to prevent their curse from spreading. Frustrated with being kept in lockdown, the town's teenagers decide to break their strict regulations and go viral with the haunting, but in so doing send the town spiraling into the dark, medieval practices of the past."
Being October, and with Halloween just around the corner what better time to recommend a horror book. It's not often I read a "horror" book not because I get scared mostly because I don't usually find them frightening but I had saw this novel had received good reviews and so thought it was worth a try.
Hex tells the story of a small town called Black Springs which has been haunted by a 17th Century woman by the name of Katherine Van Wyler who appears around town anywhere from living rooms to the woods scaring local residents with her horrible stench and her eyes and mouth sewn shut. The town's residents have accepted her as a way of life and observe her every move, whilst trying to stop outsiders from learning of her existence.
The book starts of calm enough however the books builds and builds getting more horrifying throughout, thing going from bad to worse to beyond. I really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend picking up a copy, you can find it here, the book was first published in Dutch and according to the author's notes had had its ending changed for this English version so if anyone out there has read the original please get in touch on twitter and let me know the original ending,
You can find more about the author Thomas Olde Heuvelt here.

So I've read quite a few books recently but there just haven't been
good books for me to recommend. I thought about what else could I write, and one of my favourite things to do beside reading is to listen to podcasts, so I thought each month I could highlight what podcast I've really been enjoying.
Recently I have been obsessed and I mean
obsessed with My Dad Wrote A Porno, currently on it's second series hosted by Jamie Morton, Alice Levine and James Cooper each week they read a chapter from Belinda Blinked written by Rocky Flintstone an "erotic" novel by Jamie's father. The term erotic is used very loosely the novel and podcast attempts to follow along with the adventures of Belinda Bloomenthal a pots and pans saleswoman, which I know might not sound the sexiest of jobs, and you would be correct, but you would be surprised by what she gets up to.
One of my favorites episodes this season is a footnotes episode featuring Rachel Bloom, bringing together two of my current obsessions crazy ex-girlfriend and this podcast. They have also had other celebrity guests including Elijah Wood, and Daisy Ridley.
This podcast is absolutely hilarious I tend to listen to it in the car on my way to work, and now can't wait for it to be Monday just so I can get my next fix. It gets me laughing out loud, basically crying to myself every time, often resulting in some funny looks from other drivers but I don't care you have to give this podcast a try, I mean it has to have had millions of downloads for a reason.
Check out the My Dad Wrote A Porno website
here, where you find out more about the podcast as well as listen to all of the episodes.
So I think it's fair to say this book has received very mixed reviews. The thing is this is just the script for the play and so you can't really expect to read it the same way you can with a novel. The good thing is is your a Harry Potter fan which I most definitely am, the your already familiar with the characters and the world they live in so you can more fully immerse yourself in the world. I don't necessarily think you have to have read the previous novels to enjoy this(not that I understand why you wouldn't want to) as I think the story can be seen as a standalone novel but of course the back story helps.
Obviously I imagine being lucky enough to go and watch the play would be 1000x times better than just reading the script, however that really isn't an option for me and I imagine many many others, who like me haven't got the money, and don't live in London so at least we have the script and get a feeling for the play and the story.
Of course for Potter fans this is a nice extension to the story we all love, we get to catch up with the families, see whats everyone is up to and how the years have treated them since we left them 19 years ago! For me I enjoyed reading it, its quick to read and I loved the few hours I got to spend back the world of Harry Potter.
Let me know if you have read Harry Potter & The Cursed Child and what you thought about it, and don't forget to leave me your book recommendations.

"Evie Snow is eighty-two when she quietly passes away in her sleep, surrounded by her children and grandchildren. It's the way most people wish to leave the world but when Evie reaches the door of her own private heaven, she finds that she's become her twenty-seven-year-old self and the door won't open.
Evie's soul must be light enough to pass through so she needs to get rid of whatever is making her soul heavy. For Evie, this means unburdening herself of the three secrets that have weighed her down for over fifty years, so she must find a way to reveal them before it's too late. As Evie begins the journey of a lifetime, she learns more about life and love than she ever thought possible, and somehow , some way, she may also find her way back to her long lost love . . ."
I'll start of by saying I am a big fan of Carrie, and have been subscribed to her youtube channel ItsWayPastMyBedtime for years. She comes across as such a nice genuine person, not only can she sing, and act and be an all round talented person it turns out she can also write a really good book.
On the Other Side is the first fiction novel from Carrie Hope Fletcher, and follows the story of Evie Snow as she finds she is unable to enter her own heaven, following her as she tells the secrets she has kept during her life and by unburdening her secrets, with a little of magic for help, will lighten her soul so she can enter her heaven.
Like I said I love Carrie and so I had high hopes for this book, and I wasn't disappointed, It is a charming novel with a love story at the heart which after reading will give you that warm fuzzy feeling. Overall definitely worth reading and a good debut novel, and a perfect easy read for over the summer.

"All Tom's friends really are superheroes.
There's the Ear, the Spooner, the Impossible Man. Tom even married a superhero, the Perfectionist. But at their wedding, the Perfectionist was hypnotized (by ex-boyfriend Hypno, of course) to believe that Tom is invisible. Nothing he does can make her see him. Six months later, she's sure that Tom has abandoned her.
So she's moving to Vancouver. She'll use her superpower to make Vancouver perfect and leave all the heartbreak in Toronto. With no idea Tom's beside her, she boards an airplane in Toronto. Tom has until the wheels touch the ground in Vancouver to convince her he's visible, or he loses her forever."
This is a really short and sweet little book, easily readable in one sitting and well worth a read. A romance story with a twist, full of quirky superheroes. I've seen many reviews on this book and seems to be a bit of a marmite book, some people absolutely love it whilst others really don't. I personally really enjoyed reading it, you can read more about the book here, and check out author Andrew Kaufman here.

" "What are we going to do?"
"Something very foolish."
Princess Katherine of Elderhaime is engaged to be married to a man she's never met. Frankly, she's a bit hacked off about it, but things are about to get a whole lot worse.
Katherine finds herself lost in the wilderness of an ancient, war torn world. With only her court Jester for protection, she races through a not-so-magical kingdom populated by swashbuckling heroes, sinister villains, witches, kings, ninja children and nightmarish creatures.
Nothing in this world is as it seems, including her foolish companion.
Pursued by outlaws and monsters, Katherine will be forced to decide between her hopes of true love and the chance for peace for her troubled land. So, y'know, no pressure...
The Princess and the Fool is a thrilling adventure dealing with duty, destiny, desire, danger and derring-do. A fairy tale with an irreverent sense of humour, a heart full of hope and a talking puppet. "
The Princess and The Fool is the debut novel from Paul Neafcy and it's a good'un. We follow the adventures of The Princess and (and as you've probably guessed) her fool. This is a great novel to escape into , theres a bit of everything in there Kings, Queens, Magic, Fantasy, Adventure, Humour and Romance. I'm hoping the Princess and the fool will be returning so I can continue keeping up with their adventures. I'd definitely recommend grabbing a copy of this book its currently only 99p on the kindle store, but with the rate at which the £ is losing value this week I'd grab this bargain whilst you can!
Let me know if you have read this novel and what your thoughts are, and of course don't forget to leave me your recommendations !

"When Edie is caught in a compromising position at her colleagues’ wedding, all the blame falls on her – turns out that personal popularity in the office is not that different from your schooldays. Shamed online and ostracised by everyone she knows, Edie’s forced to take an extended sabbatical – ghostwriting an autobiography for hot new acting talent, Elliot Owen. Easy, right?
Wrong. Banished back to her home town of Nottingham, Edie is not only dealing with a man who probably hasn’t heard the word ‘no’ in a decade, but also suffering an excruciating regression to her teenage years as she moves back in with her widowed father and judgy, layabout sister.
When the world is asking who you are, it’s hard not to question yourself. Who’s that girl? Edie is ready to find out."
I have read all of Mhairi McFarlane's books and have enjoyed them all and her newest novel
Who's That Girl? definitely disappoint. I honestly didn't out down this book until i'd finished, but then is there a better way to spend a lazy Sunday then reading all day? Mhairi had me laughing, crying and even finding myself getting frustrated and angry with characters as certain points and I think this is something she does really well, making characters seem really "real" so you connect with them and feel for them. Sometimes a good old chick-lit novel is what you need to escape the real world for a bit and this ticks the box.

Somewhere within our crowded sky, a crew of wormhole builders hops from planet to planet, on their way to the job of a lifetime. To the galaxy at large, humanity is a minor species, and one patched-up construction vessel is a mere speck on the starchart. This is an everyday sort of ship, just trying to get from here to there.
But all voyages leave their mark, and even the most ordinary of people have stories worth telling. A young Martian woman, hoping the vastness of space will put some distance between herself and the life she‘s left behind. An alien pilot, navigating life without her own kind. A pacifist captain, awaiting the return of a loved one at war.
Set against a backdrop of curious cultures and distant worlds, this episodic tale weaves together the adventures of nine eclectic characters, each on a journey of their own.
"When Rosemary Harper joins the crew of the Wayfarer, she isn't expecting much. The Wayfarer, a patched-up ship that's seen better days, offers her everything she could possibly want: a small, quiet spot to call home for a while, adventure in far-off corners of the galaxy, and distance from her troubled past.
But Rosemary gets more than she bargained for with the Wayfarer. The crew is a mishmash of species and personalities, from Sissix, the friendly reptillian pilot, to Kizzy and Jenks, the constantly sparring engineers who keep the ship running. Life on board is chaotic, but more or less peaceful - exactly what Rosemary wants.
Until the crew are offered the job of a lifetime: the chance to build a hyperspace tunnel to a distant planet. They'll earn enough money to live comfortably for years... if they survive the long trip through war-torn interstellar space without endangering any of the fragile alliances that keep the galaxy peaceful.
But Rosemary isn't the only person on board with secrets to hide, and the crew will soon discover that space may be vast, but spaceships are very small indeed."
The Long Way to A Small Angry Planet is the first book in the Wayfarers series by Becky Chambers, the book follows Rosemary Harper as she is hired as a clerk and joins the crew of the Wayfarer a tunnelling ship that is past its prime. The book was so much fun to read, its been a while since I have read something like this set in outer-space we meet many different species, you find yourself immersed in the different world, a definite page turner! I personally can't wait for the second book in the series which I believe is out in October this year.

Everyone knows a couple like Jack and Grace.
He has looks and wealth, she has charm and elegance. You might not want to like them, but you do. Though, you’d like to get to know Grace better
.
But it’s difficult, because you realise Jack and Grace are never apart.
Some might call this true love. Others might ask why Grace never answers the phone. Or how she can never meet for coffee, even though she doesn't work. How she can cook such elaborate meals but remain so slim. And why there are bars on one of the bedroom windows.
Sometimes, the perfect marriage is the perfect lie.
I'll start of by saying this is definitely the best book I have read this year, It is a really strong debut novel from B.A. Paris. It manages to keep you thinking throught the novel and just when you think you know where it's going not all will be as it seems.
We read the novel from Grace's point of view, a women who has it all, the perfect husband, the perfect home, the perfect life! The timeline flicks between between a year before the story and the present day, until the two meet at the conclusion. I personally liked this aspect of the book as we get a better understanding of the characters and their motivations.
I'd definitely recommend you check this book out, especially if you enjoy a psychological thriller, like Girl On The Train from last year. (mild spoiler) One final note alls I'm going to say is the most shocking scene for me involved the housekeeper.
You can buy Behind Closed Doors here if your interested. Let me know of you've read this book and what you thoughts where, and of course leave me any recommendations in the comments.
